Recreational Therapy

Recreational Therapy uses activity-based interventions to support physical, emotional, and social well-being. Often integrated into care plans for individuals in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and community programs, recreational therapists design personalized activities that align with each person’s interests and abilities. These services are not just about enjoyment—they are essential tools for enhancing quality of life, improving mobility, reducing stress, and promoting meaningful engagement.

Recreational Therapy for Care Agencies

Care agencies increasingly include recreational therapy as part of their interdisciplinary approach. By partnering with recreational therapists, agencies can offer more comprehensive support for clients dealing with cognitive decline, recovery from injury, chronic illness, or social isolation. These therapists work alongside case managers, nurses, and social workers to ensure activities meet therapeutic goals and support overall care plans.

Recreational Therapy for Families

Families can also collaborate with recreational therapists to extend the benefits of therapy into daily life. Whether it’s planning accessible outings, adapting hobbies, or creating routine-based engagement strategies, recreational therapy provides practical tools that empower families to stay connected and proactive in care. Through social prescriptions—non-medical referrals to community-based activities—therapists can also help clients find purpose and connection beyond the clinical setting.

Psychotherapy & Counseling

Psychotherapy, also commonly referred to as simply “therapy” or “counseling,” is a powerful way to overcome past experiences, learn to live life to the fullest, but also prepare for the future. Therapy includes a wide array of treatments, but they are all aimed at problematic symptoms (anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma to name a few) and behavioral concerns (anger outbursts, impulsive decisions, isolation, and more). While treatment goals are specialized for each client, the overall goal is the same: to relieve symptoms and make changes. Changes are scary, but necessary for getting us to where we want to be. Alabama Aegis offers in-person therapy services in Tuscaloosa, and virtual (teledoc) therapy services across the state. We welcome individuals 18 and older from all walks and identities.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

DBT was developed from a philosophical process called “dialectics” which is a fancy way of saying that everything is composed of “opposites.” As humans, we come with lots of emotions, and often those emotions are in direct opposition to each other. DBT teaches us that it’s okay to have both feelings, but goes a step further to teach us what to do about them. Commonly used as treatment for diagnoses such as Borderline Personality Disorder, Disordered Eating, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, DBT teaches clients to be aware of the present moment without judgement, to handle a crisis without making it worse, to understand their emotions, and how to maintain relationships with others. The main focus of DBT is to learn effective strategies for changing problematic behaviors; let us help you make that change.

Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)

If you’ve been diagnosed or are struggling with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Phobias, or Social Anxiety, ERP might be for you. ERP is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that is specifically created to target certain behaviors and fears with the goal of reducing the frequency and intensity of these problematic symptoms. ERP works through gradual exposures to situations that might trigger a person’s obsession, fear, or anxiety. Response prevention is focused on teaching clients how to resist the urge to give in to their compulsions. ERP can be a lot of work for the client, but the rewards of overcoming certain triggers can be worth it. Our trained therapist will work with you to ensure that ERP is being performed safely and at a pace that is appropriate for you.

Lifespan Integration (LI)

Alabama Aegis is excited to be home to Tuscaloosa’s only trained Lifespan Integration therapist!

While you probably didn’t cause all of your wounds and scars, you were likely left to heal them on your own. Let our trained LI therapist walk with and support you in this journey of healing. LI is a bottoms-up modality that targets symptoms at the body’s core. LI is a gentle method that operates on a deep neural level to change engrained patterns and defensive strategies. LI relies on the innate ability of the body-mind to heal itself. Think of it like this-the mind knows the pain is in the past, but we have to teach the body to turn off “fight or flight” mode. LI can often times reach a greater clarity, understanding, and healing than other styles of talk-therapy. The length of time needed in therapy depends widely, based on each individual’s need. LI is beneficial to those with anxiety, PTSD, prenatal and birth trauma, attachment concerns, identity or self-esteem issues, and relationship difficulties. Learn more about LI therapy here and the neuroscience behind it here.
